The Art of Album Rollouts: Kanye’s Donda Experience

With Ye’s (Kanye West) twelfth studio album Bully set to release on the thirtieth of January it’s the perfect moment to back at one of the most legendary events a part of an album rollout EVER.

Leading up to this event West was preparing to drop an album to succeed his well-received Christian genre album Jesus Is King which went number one on the Billboard 200 and added another Grammy to his already plentiful collection. The name of this album was God’s Country. Arthur Jafa, an American Cinematographer, leaked this information on an Instagram live on May 25th, 2020, with Michele Lamy, French Designer and Rick Owen’s wife. The video West and Jafa would be the first single off the rollout named Wash Us in the Blood featuring Travis Scott. This video would give us the creative direction of the album which gave us themes of personal reflection and political messaging.

But West would soon decide on a new name for the album. Donda. This album would be named after his late mother, Donda West, who passed on November 10th, 2007 due to post surgery complications. After a failed presidential campaign and marriage issues with his then wife Kim Kardashian in 2020 it seems like Ye went ghost. We wouldn’t see west until a year later in the summer of 2021 where he would be seen rocking a mask. This led to momentum building as people began to release footage of West in the studio with Tyler the Creator and West teasing his album with a commercial starring Sha’Carri Richardson that featured the song “No Child Left Behind.
